Who am I?

Maxwell Holt

My origin story...

In a small suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland, a designer was born. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer changed frequently. At one point, I wanted to be an architect; at another, I wanted to create video games. I even considered becoming an illustrator. The motivation to create was always present, but it wasn't until high school that I truly embraced my path as a designer. I took it as a sign when I enrolled in nearly every design course my school offered and still felt the urge to continue learning.

With that determination, I sought a warmer environment and went to Savannah, Georgia. After graduating from SCAD in 2020 with a BFA in Graphic Design, I embarked on a career as a full-fledged freelance designer.

My career so far...

Graduating during the pandemic presented its fair share of challenges, the most prevalent challenge being that design jobs were scarce. After a brief stint in the freelance market and some part-time work in retail, I secured a position at Deloitte. Now the challenge was to prove myself as a graphic designer, but as projects came my way, I found myself taking on many new roles, with the most significant of them being UI/UX designer. From PowerPoint graphics to maintaining robust design systems, if it was tagged for a designer, I took it on.

My motivation as a designer...

Over the past five years since graduating, I have had a lot of time to reflect on what motivates me to get out of bed in the morning and start working on wireframes even before I can imagine the smell of brewing coffee. The most reasonable answer I can come up with, aside from simply enjoying cool projects, is the desire to make an impact. I found my work with Government and Public Services to be the most fulfilling because its effects on the world around me have been the most tangible, particularly in projects aimed at helping people through their lives.

I mean, what good is any design if it's not solving people's problems? Or, at the very least, looking dope while trying to solve a problem?
